Repair, paint and vehicle custody

Bodyshop Insurance for Collision Repair Businesses

A bodyshop combines valuable customer vehicles with hazardous processes, specialist equipment and lengthy repair cycles. The insurance presentation should describe the workshop as it actually operates.

Customer vehicles can remain in your care for days or weeks

Collision repair differs from quick mechanical work because damaged vehicles may be immobile, partly dismantled or waiting for parts. Values can accumulate quickly across the workshop, yard and external storage areas. A proposal should distinguish vehicles awaiting estimate, work in progress, completed vehicles and total losses awaiting collection.

Insurers may ask about perimeter security, lighting, alarms, CCTV, key cabinets, vehicle movements and whether premises are left unattended. The declared customer-vehicle limit should reflect a plausible peak, not an average quiet day.

Processes create a different fire and liability profile

Spraying, paint mixing, grinding, welding, battery charging and hot work require documented controls. Extraction maintenance, waste handling, flammable-liquid storage and booth servicing can be relevant to both acceptance and policy conditions.

Where subcontractors operate on site, the business should be clear about who supervises them, which insurance they hold and whether their work is included within the bodyshop’s declared activities.

Workshop property

Buildings, tenant improvements, spray booths, compressors, jigs, lifts, diagnostic systems and portable tools may need separate values and bases of settlement.

Road risks

Collection, delivery, road testing, courtesy cars and movements between sites should match the permitted drivers and uses.

Liability exposures

Employee injury, visitor access, faulty workmanship, completed operations and vehicle damage can arise from different legal allegations.

Prepare a bodyshop submission that explains capacity

Useful information includes annual labour and parts turnover, the split between insurer-approved and private work, maximum vehicle values, numbers held overnight, repair specialisms, EV capability, calibration work, staffing, apprentices, security and five years of claims information.

Also consider the time needed to replace a booth or major jig after a fire. Business interruption calculations should allow for planning, equipment lead times, insurer approvals and the possibility that customers temporarily move work elsewhere.

This page is general pre-launch guidance. Actual cover, limits and conditions depend on the insurer and the facts presented.
