How insurers build a motor-trade price
What Affects Motor Trade Insurance Cost?
Premium reflects the combination of activities, drivers, vehicles, premises, limits and claims—not simply whether the business calls itself a garage or trader.
Activities determine the starting risk
Mechanical repair, bodywork, vehicle sales, recovery, tyre fitting and mobile work create different accident and property exposures. Welding, spraying, performance modifications or work on high-value vehicles may change both appetite and terms.
Turnover should be split accurately between activities where requested. A broad total can hide the part of the business that drives the exposure.
Drivers and vehicles can dominate road-risk pricing
Age, experience, convictions, previous claims and the way drivers are selected all matter. Insurers may also consider the maximum value and performance of vehicles driven, not only the trader’s own stock.
Adding an occasional driver or changing the permitted vehicle range can affect the quotation disproportionately if it moves the risk into a different underwriting category.
Premises change the scale of a combined policy
Buildings, tenants’ improvements, tools, machinery, stock and customer vehicles need credible values. Fire protections, alarm systems, key control, compound security and neighbouring occupancies can influence acceptance.
Claims need explanation, not concealment
Underwriters examine causes and trends. Repeated reversing losses, thefts from an unlocked yard or tool theft from vans tell different stories. Evidence of completed corrective action may improve the presentation even though the historic claims remain.
Ways to improve the quality of a quotation
Start early, reconcile the driver list, produce a current claims record, review sums insured and describe operational changes. Compare cover and conditions as well as price; removing a section or accepting an unsuitable restriction is not a genuine saving.
Market pricing and insurer appetite can change, so no guide can calculate a reliable premium without full information. CoverPilot is currently pre-launch and cannot issue quotations.
